Managing Common Stomal and Peristomal Skin Problems

  1. Describe the presentation, etiology, assessment and management of common peristomal skin problems such as: contact dermatitis, folliculitis, fungal infection, hyperplasia, mechanical injury, psoriasis, pyoderma gangrenosum, and peristomal varices.
  2. Describe the presentation, etiology, assessment, and management of the following stomal problems: peristomal hernia, stomal laceration, mucocutaneous separation, necrosis, prolapse, retraction, stenosis, unusual shape or configuration, and presence of devices.
  3. Recognize the management challenges and increased risk of stomal and peristomal skin problems in an obese patient with a stoma.
